The idea is to design an open and transparent space within a simple form where people can find peace and connect with their surroundings. As we believe, “Honesty, Transparency, and Openness bring Peace of Mind.” – Dalai Lama.

The mosque is located in West Raichota, a remote coastal area nearly 40 km south of Chi agong. It was a vital necessity, as the previous single-story mosque, built 35 years ago, had been severely affected by flooding mul ple mes, rendering it unusable. The site is surrounded by a two-story madrasa and a family graveyard to the south, another graveyard to the north, and to the west, a pond and a typical shelter house cum primary school, which inspired the mosque’s formal expression.

Users typically enter from the east, alongside an open green space, which serves as a playground for madrasa students and addi onal prayer space for Eid Jamat, replacing a small pond that once existed there. A larger pond with a ghat for ablu on and bathing has been introduced to the north. The mosque also features a rear entry from the west.

Considering the coastal environment, the mosque is designed on a raised pla orm, with a frontal plaza that serves as both addi onal prayer space and a social gathering area. The main prayer hall is open and transparent, ensuring natural light and cross ven la on. Large windows flood the space with daylight, while the contrast between the outer family graveyard and the inner prayer hall establishes a spiritual connec on between present life and the a erlife. Repe ve ver cal walls func on as fins that reduce glare, while the jali (perforated) wall filters light, crea ng a beau ful interplay of light and shadow.

The jali wall’s geometric pa ern is formed by con nuously flipping custom-made R.C.C. blocks. Each block features five arms around a pentagon with five addi onal holes, symbolizing the significance of the number five in Islam—the Five Pillars, five daily prayers, and five Kalimas.

A double-height volume with a glass roof is created above the mihrab, visually linking the upper and lower levels. The mihrab is adorned with wooden veneer panels and bookshelves, adding emphasis and depth. This double-height space, open to the sky and rain, evokes a profound connec on between the finite and the infinite.
